Souls of Mischief

Recorded Aug. 13, 2013

East Oakland’s Souls of Mischief are members of the loose underground hip-hop consortium known as Hieroglyphics. The group consists of four erudite but hardcore MCs—A-Plus, Phesto, Opio, and Tajai—whose mindset combines chaos, danger, and the avant-garde, all from an intellectual B-Boy perspective. Their 1993 debut album, 93 ‘Til Infinity, produced an early-‘90s anthem of the same name and spawned a movement toward bohemian yet rugged hip-hop. The crew drew comparisons to De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest for their abstract, whimsical style of storytelling. Two years later, Souls of Mischief shucked off their reputation for their second album, No Man’s Land. While the crew lost some fans who were looking for a “‘95 Til,” they managed to retain a loyal fan base who respected their artistic development. Rather than stick to the formula that made them popular with the college hip-hop set, they shattered their image similar to the way De La Soul had done with their second album, De La Soul Is Dead.

Souls of Mischief is a hip-hop group from Oakland, California that formed while its four members A-Plus, Tajai, Phesto and Opio were still in high school. Shortly after coming together, the quartet signed with Jive Records and released their smash debut 93 'til Infinity; the album was also labeled one of the Top 100 Rap albums by Source Magazine in 1998. Twenty years after its release, the record is still considered an anthem by Souls of Mischief fans, a pivotal moment in hip-hop history that drastically impacted the direction of the genre.

Over the last two decades, Souls of Mischief have released four additional studio albums: No Man's Land (1995), Focus (1999), Trilogy: Conflict, Climax, Resolution (2000) and Montezuma's Revenge (2009). In 1995, the four band members pulled their resources to begin work on a side project that later became known as the hip-hop collective Hieroglyphics. While Souls of Mischief have participated in each of Hieroglyphics' three studio albums, they have never forgotten the impact their debut album had on the hip-hop world.

In 2013, Souls of Mischief celebrated the 20 year anniversary of 93 'til Infinity with a deluxe re-issue and tour, including a stop at The Belly Up Tavern on August 13, 2013.  Featuring 16 tracks from that night and clocking in at just over an hour of music; Live at the Belly Up captures a performance that proves that Souls of Mischief are every bit as vibrant as the day they stormed onto the scene; and their music and message stands the test of time.
